Data in the data Item search

I've a data item and have a long data string which is un formatted. I tried to get into a collection and search the exact text. I have tried several ways but it doesn't work as required. I actually wanted to search a specific string and from the data item and trim the first 4 character only if it matches and extract those 4 chars in a data item.
It doesn't work as I wanted, just wanted to know if anything suggestions.

You can rely on regex. Give an example string for precise answer.

I did that with out regex. It worked
